Housing OptionsThe usual choice for housing is the "homestay", where a student resides with a host family for the duration of the term, thus providing an unparalleled opportunity to learn Spanish language and culture. Homestays come in two varieties: "bed-and-breakfast" ("b&b"), in which breakfast is the only meal provided, and "half-board", which includes an evening meal as well as breakfast. Students normally have their own rooms in homestays, although rooms can also be shared if requested. In addition, although students normally also share bathrooms, ALBA offers the choice of a private bathroom. For independently-minded students there is also a choice of furnished apartment living: a room in a shared apartment (including shared bath and kitchen), or a private apartment of variable size. Note that under this option no meals are provided. Also, in summer only, students can opt to stay in a residence - in essence a student hostel - with either a shared or private room, and either a "b&b" or half-board meal option as with a homestay. Note that the normal arrival date is one or two days prior to orientation, with departure on the day after the end of final exams. Longer stays may be arranged at additional cost, but require at least one month's advance notice Also note that ALBA reserves the right to levy a surcharge on housing costs in the event that our own dollar costs increase by more than ten percent over the course of a term due to currency fluctuations.
