Political development in Europe: theory and historical experience; national political systems compared. The various forms of democracy: parties, elections, institutions and interest groups. Transition issues: immigration and cultural autonomy; the EU decision-making process.

Government and Politics of Spain

History of Spanish democracy: republican movements and reactionism: "red and black" Spain; the Civil War and the Franco regime; the transition to modern democracy: the monarchy, the constitution, and the three-branch system of government; political parties and elections; other interest groups and cultural identities within Spain. Delayed industrialization, immigration and other economic issues.

Introduction to International Relations

Nation-states, inter- and non-governmental organizations: the international political system as contrasted with domestic politics; national interest and national power, economic and military; foreign policy, diplomacy and security issues: selected case studies.
