Introduction to International Economics

An introduction to comparative advantage in simple and extended models; the arguments for and against free trade and the evolution of international trade relations; the Balance-of-Payments and foreign exchange markets: the "fixed vs. floating" debate and the evolution of the IMF and international monetary system; the World Bank and problems of less-developed-countries.

Trade Theory and Policy

Theory of trade including Ricardian and Standard (neoclassical) models: determinants of the pattern of trade, terms of trade and the gains from trade; Heckscher-Ohlin (H-O) and Factor Price Equalization (FPE) theorems; the effects of tariffs and quotas. Post-WWII trade policy: the GATT and the WTO; regionalization and current trade issues, including developed and developing-country relations.

International Monetary and Financial Economics

Open-economy macroeconomics under alternative exchange-rate regimes: short- and long-run models; spot and forward market equilibria; hedging. The post-WWII international monetary system: from Bretton Woods to floating rate; European Monetary Union (EMU) and the pros and cons of exchange-rate regimes; problems of economic transition and development and the role of the International Monetary Fund.
