Modern Spain: the "Golden Age" and the spread of Renaissance humanism from Italy. Foundations of Spanish art: El Greco and Velasquez; Goya, Zurbaran, Murillo, Valdes, Leal. Baroque architecture and scuplture. Goya; art nouveau and modernism (Gaudi, Jujol); the avant garde(Picasso); surrealism (Dali); Miro, Gris.

Modern Spanish Film and Literature

A survey of 20th-century Spanish literature: Latin American contributions to modernismo; Lorca and the Civil War generation; contemporary trends. Early film-making: political and social statements; film and television as a social norm: the Franco era. European "new wave" cinema; contemporary fims and film-makers in Spain.
