Area Subjects

The following courses - excepting language - are all upper-division level and are taught in English as 3 semester-credit (5 quarter-credit) courses, although they can occasionally carry one extra credit (4 semester or 6 quarter credits, which is the norm for language classes). They may also be available at varying levels of Spanish depending upon demand. Students normally take three classes: language (required) and two electives. For summer terms, in addition to language, students take one elective: either Geography, Peoples and Society of Spain, or Modern Spanish Art and Architecture depending on which is offered (see below). It is usual for at least one course from each of the five areas to run each term, and for each course to be offered at least once during the academic year. However, depending upon demand any of these courses may be offered in any particular term. Also depending upon demand,it is sometimes possible to offer additional courses that are not regularly listed. All ALBA courses are transcripted through Portland State University in Portland, Oregon, and all course syllabuses are available upon request.
